Halloween holds a special place in my heart, so this week I’m exploring three ways to make your music sound scary using some of the same techniques as the greats like Bernard Herrmann, the composer behind the score for Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”
The three tips I give center around harmony, performance techniques, and putting the “whole” of a piece front and center. Even with just a small working knowledge of music and a little theory is all it takes to start shaping the fears of your listeners.
Not only do we cover actionable tools to make your own terrifying tune, but we also discuss the importance of things like momentum and atmosphere, and how they create a basis for the feelings we want to convey in our music.
If you want to support Just Write Music, all you have to do is watch the video to the end and engage in some way. Comment, like, subscribe, share; any and all are of immense help.
