I love extended chords. Like, a lot. They’re so expressive and beautiful and are able to convey more complex emotions and feelings than just major, minor, or seventh chords. Today I’m going over extended chords in detail to show you just how easy it is to understand, build, and voice them in your own music.
Here’s what we cover in today’s video:
-
A review of how to build triads and find chord tones using my incredibly simple method.
-
How to add an extension to an existing chord and what kinds of extensions there are.
-
Finally, we’ll cover some quick but effective ways to voice these chords and let their color shine.
I always think relating concepts back to the basics is important so you have all the tools necessary to fully understand and use these wonderful chords. It’s crazy common to just stumble on these, use them, but not actually understand what sound it is and why you like it.
It’s really incredible to see you here and interacting with these videos. But I know there’s always room for improvement, which is why I’d like to ask you two questions that will help me make better videos that are more suited to you, specifically:
-
What’s your biggest frustration with writing music? What haven’t you seen around but feel like there’s a need for?
-
What’s your biggest hope or dream for writing music? What would you like your music or your process to be like?
Please reply directly to this email with your answers to these questions. Your input is invaluable!
Thanks so much for being here. You’re awesome.
